FIRM ADMINISTRATION. Attorneys Lockhart and Hornby both have considerable
experience and training in business management and operations. For example, Ashe Lockhart
completed the management training program at First Union National
Bank and worked in banking
for five years before he went to law school. He also served as interim executive
director of a non-profit when he was Of Counsel with Womble Carlyle. Scott Hornby was COO of an
environmental services company in Detroit – in addition to serving as its general
counsel.
When it
comes to operating a law firm, Lockhart Hornby has been there and
done that. We recently reorganized
almost every aspect of our firm’s ownership, management, operations
and technology. Both partners have worked in large and small
firms. In addition to our current practice in a
small firm, both Ashe Lockhart and
Scott Hornby have
started and practiced in other small firms. That experience alone
can provide other lawyers and law firms with a head start on hanging
a shingle or ramping up an existing firm.
Citing his
military background as the rationale for an unusual
assignment, the managing partner of Ashe Lockhart's first law firm
charged him with planning and managing all aspects of the relocation of a 20 lawyer firm. The
project gave Ashe a detailed view of law firm administration and
involved
- negotiating a lease on 25,000 square feet of class-A office
space,
- subleasing unoccupied space,
- replacement and upgrade of all telecom services and equipment,
- relocation and reconfiguration of all technology systems,
- contracting for demolition and upfit of the office space,
- working with architects on functional layout and office
assignments,
- acquisition of furnishings, fixtures and equipment and
- selecting, hiring and supervising commercial moving
company.
